Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital

IMAU has constructed the first phase of this hospital on a 12-acre piece of land at Wattuba, 14km on Kampala Bombo road. The hospital complex when completed will consist of a 128 bed hospital, training facilities, conference facilities, a mosque and the International Centre for promotion of the Islamic approach to HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

The training facilities will be planned to cater for various needs of Muslim communities and other communities both nationally and internationally. For example there is need to train in service delivery, research, monitoring, evaluation and coordination of integrated AIDS related services using the Islamic approach. This training is required both at national and international levels.  Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital and training centre will be designed to address these issues. The hospital was officially opened in January 2005 by the Minister of Health. Currently the hospital is providing general medical services, free ante natal care, maternity services and outreach services for PMTCT and ART to 10 health facilities in Wakiso district. In addition Anti-retroviral treatment is provided free to PHAs. A community component enhances the faith based network model.

Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital is a private not-for-profit health institution. It is a project of the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda, a registered nongovernmental organisation. Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital is an Islamic hospital. Islam is defined as submission to God's will. A hospital is defined as an institution where the ill or injured receive medical, surgical or psychiatric treatment, nursing care, and other health services. An Islamic hospital is therefore, an institution where health services are provided in accordance with or in submission to God's will and guidance. God's will and guidance is derived from the Holy Books and the Prophets He has sent down to mankind over time.
